Highlands Ministries started eighteen years ago as an experiment we called the Highlands Study Center (HSC). The question we pondered back then was this;
“What would happen if we attempted to live like we were all on a youth retreat?”
That dynamic is something that many of us can relate to—a period of time where learning and applying the scriptures within a closed community of your peers produces a group dedicated to loving and serving the Lord and one another. The downside is that after returning from camp the world we left encroaches and over time, claims us once again. But why (we asked ourselves) can we not live in that simple, separate and deliberate environment all the time?
Looking for a Solution to Worldliness
This became our worldview, our meat and our drink. Soon, students started coming to HSC to learn this way of life and to keep it real. Married couples and entire families came for camps and conferences eagerly looking for a solution to the worldliness that they had come to see in the church at large. What began with a dire sincerity and a sophomoric template had turned into an effective ministry helping others.
In 2009 our name was changed to Highlands Ministries to represent the extended reach of our teaching and writing which had by this time incorporated the involvement of other like-minded individuals (several who are pastors) who were dedicated to the same vision for their families. More voices were added to the declaration that the kingdom of our Lord and Savior is more potent than the church-at-large realizes or recognizes.
This past year another significant transition took place. R.C. Sproul Jr., formerly the principal speaker and teacher at Highlands Ministries, is no longer with us. But our good friend and co-laborer’s influence lives on as we continue to enjoy the benefit of his transparent life and passionate teaching while he was here. R.C. now continues to challenge us all with the simple but profound truth that, Jesus Changes Everything, through the auspices of Ligonier Ministries at rcsprouljr.com.
The mission of Highlands Ministries is as important and as needed today as it was when we started back in 1996. We are transitioning to speak to a broader audience by expanding into podcasts, videos, books, pamphlets, and gatherings meeting people where they are and walking with them as they begin to reconsider the trajectory of their lives (keep up with what’s new by joining our email list).
The Joy of Living Differently
Israel of Old sang this prayer regarding the Good Life that their God had given them:
God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us,
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.
Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
Their desire was that the entire world would know the joy of a distinctly different way of life and living.
We here at Highlands Ministries wish the same for you and yours.
